Kristy McNichol Makes Believe Up Inside

Kristy McNichol “is very sad about kids being bullied,” her publicist Jeff Ballard told People Magazine. “She hopes that coming out can help kids who need support. She would like to help others who feel different.” Twenty years after leaving Hollywood behind, Kristy McNichol is returning to the spotlight to reveal a big secret.

The 49-year-old, who has been out of the public eye for many years, has lived with her partner Marite Allen for the past two decades and came out yesterday. Many LGBT stars have stepped up (and out) to speak out against teen bullying, often in the form of "It Gets Better" videos, which feature celebrities giving teens hope and advice on how to survive tormenting from their peers.

It's great to hear that she's so happy and healthy - and what a wonderful message to country's youths who are struggling with being who they truly are. If you're of a certain age, Kristy McNichol was a part of your childhood. She was everywhere in the 1970s and 1980s.

McNichol rose to fame in the 1970’s as the adorable tomboy Buddy in the television drama Family, in which Meredith Baxter, who came out as a lesbian in 2009, played her older sister. Done with acting, McNichol spends her time focusing on tennis, yoga, travel and raising her beloved miniature dachshunds.
