Jimmy Wales wanted to send a “big message”

To protest two Congressional bills intended to curtail copyright on the internet, Wikipedia become the latest Web site to plan a blackout for Wednesday. It appeared that they had agreed that the trigger for a black out would be on the passing of the bill. Despite preparations by congressional leaders to shelve the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) indefinitely.

The website will go dark for 24 hours from midnight EST on January 18 until midnight EST January 19, in an unprecedented move that brings added muscle to a growing base of critics of the legislation. Jimmy Wales wanted to send a “big message” to the U.S. government regarding the two heinous internet censorship bills currently being considered. The enormously popular online encyclopedia will join Reddit, a widely-used social media platform, in blocking its content on Jan. 18.
