While that bit of information might sound staggering in and of itself, what’s even more shocking is that it’s Streep’s first time to ever grace the cover of the mag. (That’s right, that means Kristen Stewart, Blake Lively, and Jessica Biel had all accomplished something before Meryl Streep. Let that one sink in, PopWatchers.)
The Iron Lady star, who is one of the front-runners for this year’s Best Actress Oscar race for her performance as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, has been no stranger to age discrimination before. Streep told Vogue that after she turned 40 she was offered three different roles to play a witch. This, she felt, meant Hollywood had viewed older actresses as “grotesque on some level.” Streep also revealed that, at that time, she wrongfully predicted her career was over in a conversation with her husband. (Thankfully, and unsurprisingly, it wasn’t over. And as a wise man once said, “It still isn’t over.”)The January issue of Vogue featuring the timelessly beautiful Meryl Streep hits newsstands on Dec. 20, but it can’t get there soon enough, considering it’s been a long time coming.
